To work out which power cord you should purchase, you need to check what amperage your RV is wired to, or you could buy the wrong cord and waste your time and money as it won’t power your RV.

For instance, if your RV is wired for 30 amos, then you need to buy a 30 amp power cord. 

Additionally, you should not buy more than 30 foot power cords because this extension length should give you the perfect reach that you need to hook up your RV. 

What Is The Difference Between An RV 30 Amp And 50 Amp Power Cord? 

Newsflash: not all power cords are the same! There are some pretty obvious, but also some harder to spot differences between these two power cords, and they are as follows:

  • A 30 amp cord is for a 120 volt system - it has 3 prongs: one power, one neutral, one ground.
  • Do not confuse a 30 amp RV cord with a 30 amp dryer or range cord - why is this a problem? Well, they are 240 volt cords with two power leads and one neutral with no safety ground.
  • A 50 amp power cord is designed for a 240 volt system - it has two power leads at 120 volts each, a neutral and ground wire as well.
  • A 30 amp power cord is designed to supply only 3,600 watts - whereas a 50 amp power cord is designed safely to supply up to 12,000 watts of power. If you let 50 amps of electricity flow through an RV designed for 30 amps, you could cause a fire or other damage to not just your RV, but its equipment and facilities too.

The amount of current that flows through your RV and its wiring is not recognised by the wiring or by the power cord, but by the appliances and by the voltage potential at the power source.

Why Do You Need A RV Power Cord Adapter?

You need a RV power cord adapter in order to hook up your RV to a power supply.

There are a few hiccups that you may encounter, because although you might be carrying the correct power cord for your RV, you might park up on a campsite with your 30 amp RV, and your 30 amp power cord and they supply 50 amp power.

We told you this was a bit of a hiccup.

To solve this problem you can either carry more power cords, which would contribute to the weight of your RV and might ensue a storage problem, or you can carry a power adapter with you.

These are lightweight, do not take up a lot of space and they can help you get power when your 30 amp RV is in a 50 amp campsite. These adapters work the other way too, so if you had a 50 amp RV and a 50 amp cord, but the campsite was 30 amp this adapter would work for you too.

Overall, it is clear that on the power cord market - there are lots of solutions to any difficulties you may encounter, but be smart and only buy added extras if you know you will absolutely need them.
